UX of Bodyworn cameras
Body Worn Cameras for First Responders
I performed design research projects on body worn cameras (BWC) to improve the human factors and user experience. BWCs impact police behavior in many ways, big and small. Police officers already carry approximately 9-12 different items on their body when on duty, so from a cognitive standpoint, they are already overloaded. The addition of a BWC adds to their cognitive load and if the camera has not integrated human factors best practices, the cameras might not get turned out. During the year-long study research was conducted in the lab and in the field, including interviews and ride-alongs. The outcome of the study provided design guidelines that improved the ease of use and effectiveness for one companies BWC.
UX of Voting
Voting Technology and Ballot design impact election outcomes
When a citizen casts a vote, it should count for the candidate they intended. All too often, design errors get in the way of this constitutional right. I have worked on many project focused on ballot design and voting technologies. Learn more by downloading this presentation.
My team at Eastman Kodak Research Labs came up with the metaphors for image organization. The first one was to use GPS data on image files to do data visualization.
Patent
The patent is for the first design for using maps with images as icons to show picture capture location.
Patents sold
Kodak eventually sold the patents to Apple and now you can see the visualization in iPhoto

From volunteer events, design challenges and research projects I have been able to push the bounds of current status quo and innovate. Examples include, founding running World Usability Day, producing and 4 Patents on intelligent design for image management and organizations, long term impact on Medicare.gov, yearlong study on body worn cameras and other projects.

My creative passion for sharing and exchanging knowledge has grown into design research education for undergraduate and graduate students. When I was doing graduate work at the Media Lab at MIT I taught photography to undergrads. Now I am teaching design thinking for people in all stages of life. I have developed courses for
people of all levels, including 9 years of teaching graduate students. Topics included photography and graphic design, then user
interface design, design thinking and design research.
