At Eastman Kodak Company Research Labs, my team developed some of the earliest metaphors for organizing digital images. One of our breakthrough ideas was using GPS metadata embedded in image files to create visual, location-based ways of exploring photo collections. That work later became foundational to iPhoto, after Apple Inc. acquired and built upon the patents we had developed at Kodak.
Patent
The patent is for the first design for using maps with images as icons to show picture capture location.
Patents sold
Kodak eventually sold the patents to Apple and now you can see the visualization in iPhoto
UX of Bodyworn cameras
Body Worn Cameras for First Responders
I led design research on body-worn cameras (BWCs) to improve usability and human factors for law enforcement. Because officers already manage significant cognitive and physical load while on duty, adding a BWC can create friction if the technology is not designed intuitively. Through a year-long combination of lab studies, field research, interviews, and ride-alongs, the project produced design guidelines that improved the usability and effectiveness of one company’s BWC system.
UX of Voting
Voting Technology and Ballot design impact election outcomes
When a citizen casts a vote, it should count for the candidate they intended. All too often, design errors get in the way of this constitutional right. I have worked on many project focused on ballot design and voting technologies. Learn more by downloading this presentation.
My passion is using design to make the world a better place.I believe that the best design comes from good research. This all starts with user-entered design. From volunteer events, design challenges and research projects I have been able to push the bounds of current status quo and innovate. Examples include, founding running World Usab

From volunteer events, design challenges and research projects I have been able to push the bounds of current status quo and innovate. My creative passion for sharing and exchanging knowledge has grown into design research education for undergraduate and graduate students. When I was doing graduate work at the Media Lab at MIT I taught photography to undergrads. Now I am teaching design thinking for people in all stages of life. I have developed courses for
people of all levels, including 9 years of teaching graduate students. Topics included photography and graphic design, then user
interface design, design thinking and design research.
